A BUSY OCTOBER...

Inline Image

Dear members of Ciancia,

This month I have two announcements about two important figures who have left us: the Italian myth Sandro Mazzola and our beloved, Atlanta based, Tito Mazzetta, sadly the latter before his time. We dedicated two profiles to them and their role. On the other side of the spectrum, life keeps bringing new joys. For example, last month, the F1 in Monza was crowned by our new Italian star, the talented, twenty year old, Kimi Antonelli.

Last month, you might have noticed that our primary website was down: it had glitches and has been in need of a major overhaul. With seven current extensions, and a Facebook page, all held at different locations and servers, each one with access verification codes, separate billing, it was a maze, hard to navigate and subject to continuous breakdowns. Here is the old list:
.
1. Our www.ciancia.org website
2. Our domain name holder (Ionos)
3. Our primary database, anchored to our website
4. Our secondary database of the bulletin’s emailer
5. Our back panel of our website
6. Our back panel of the emailer
7. Our link between the “subscribe here” feature and our database
8. Ciancia email platform
9. Our Ciancia Facebook page

The cost of putting every one of these features under a single platform is bound to consume our entire 2026 budget. But it is necessary as these separate systems are often down and are driving us crazy, taking hours of our time to send the bulleting out. Bottom line, we decided to overhaul the entire system. You may not see the difference from your side, but now Ciancia is more stable and secured, easier to manage and less costly. Furthermore, it is now easier subscribing to it and communicating to us.

Our regular meeting this month takes place on October 18, at the house of Donata De Filippi, our Slow Food expert and wise food & health advisor. Same potluck formula as always. Scroll below for details and location.

We are still looking for host for November and January, so if you have room to host our club, please, contact me a.s.a.p. at agpirrone@mindspring.com with the title: Hosting Ciancia.

OUR OCTOBER CLUB MEETING!

Inline Image

Our next meeting takes place at the house of our long-time supporter Donata DeFilippi, a lifetime representative and advocate of the Slow Food Movement. Donata’s parents were both born near Torino in the Piedmont region of Italy. She has carried on the culture of food through her participation in the Slow Food movement, originated by Carlo Petrini, in the late 1980s as a reaction to the outrageous attempt of McDonald’s to open an outlet in Roma, spreading thereafter around the globe in opposition to highly-processed, preservative-rich and adulterated grub.  No Italian would consider getting near that toxic stuff.  With the awareness of what damage that type of massive production costs to our economy, our health and our environment, Donata supports the local sustainable farming movement by buying, cooking, canning, and producing videos to urge others to adopt sustainable food practices. Her expertise on food practices goes from food production and food waste, to sustainability and healthy living. Donata is also a communications trainer primarily servicing federal agencies.

Hostess: Donata De Filippi

DISTRACTED PEDESTRIANS II

Inline Image

Last month, we posted an initiative which is part of the summer season's curiosities. The Italian government was debating a traffic code amendment to fine distracted pedestrians €75 for using phones or tablets while crossing the street, perhaps unaware that most Italians do anyway the sign of the cross, before they venture into the pavement.

As crosswalks don’t mean a thing in Italy, but perhaps a zebra decoration, if you want to get to the other side of the street, you need to throw yourself into the incoming traffic, hoping that God is watching and may want to protect you.

Yet, this new rule did not solve the problem of distracted pedestrians on the sidewalk bumping unto each other. So, there is a new poposal on the docket, made by some humorous social observers.

The picture says it all.

A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE YOUR ITALIAN

Inline Image

Our smaller conversation group continues! This is a place where you can get together on an ongoing basis with members who are interested in honing their language skills, for actual conversation in Italian. We never truly had such a place for quietly practicing Italian.  Being open to anyone, our general club meetings often end up splitting in smaller groups that converse in various languages, including English. The idea of gathering independently from our regular meeting to exclusively speak Italian is more conducive to learning. We decided that meeting at a cafè works best. All beginners are welcome!

Since this is a self-managed gathering, the participants may decide to schedule this group more often. Given that Atlanta’s traffic has become an ominous obstacle for those traveling from afar, we scheduled these meetings off rush hours. Unlike our regular meetings where we collect funds for our expenses, there is no door charge at these conversation meetings. Furthermore, this cafè serves some of the best coffees and Italian gelato in Atlanta! We hope you like this idea. All dates below are effective, and you may pick any or all:

Sunday,  October 11, 2026

Sunday, October 18, 2026

Sunday, October 25, 2026

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Location:
Three Peaches Gelato Coffee
985 B Monroe Drive NE
Atlanta, GA 30308

Parking Warning: Parking in the front lot is limited, and security is tightly monitored by cameras. If you park and leave the lot or go somewhere else after the meeting your car will likely be booted.

UNA GRANDE PERDITA PER IL CALCIO ITALIANO

Inline Image

In quel periodo, ci sentivamo quasi giornalmente.

Giovanni Vacccarella

Here is our current team:
